Are you not asking for the raises, promotions, or career opportunities you want because you dont think you could get them? Or worse, because dont think you deserve them?If so, Im here to tell you that youre not alone, but- more importantly- that you dont have to let a lack of confidence hold you back at work. In my work as a career coach, Ive worked with many people who struggle to believe that theyre good at what they do and help them find confidence they need to get ahead. The trick? Understanding why you feel the way that you do so you can focus on making a change (for the better).In my experience, career confidence is based on three key things Your comfort in any given situation Your understanding of your strengths and talents The little voices in yo ur head and your ability not to listen to themLets break it down, shall we? Here are three questions to ask yourself- and how to use them to boost your confidence at work.Question 1 How Comfortable Are You in Your Job Right Now?Think about it When youre uncomfortable in what you do or where you are, you can feel it- it impacts your body language, your conversations, and your interactions with others. Not exactly a breeding ground for confidence, right? On the other hand, when you know how you fit into a situation and how everything works, youre comfortable, you can relax a bit, and youre bound to feel more self-assured.So, take a moment and do an assessment Are you comfortable in what youre doing? Are you feeling relaxed in your office (or in your job search?). Or, are you often in new situations or scenarios that stress you out and make you feel constantly on edge? If its the latter, its probably impacting your confidence.Heres What You DoIf you work in a place where you never feel like you have the chance to get comfortable, take a second and write down three things that would make you feelbetter. Things like developing a morning routine that relaxes you, making your workspace your own, or talking to your boss about giving you more structure can go along way toward building up your comfort level.If youre job searching or doing some personal development, what one thing can youdo to increase your sense of comfort? Visit an interview site the day before your actual meeting? Read up on a new technique or learning that you are about to invest in? What is your biggest source of stress right now, and how can you alleviate it?Question 2 How Good Are You at What You Do?Confidence increases when you do work that is easy for you and makes you feel good. On the flip side, when you do work thats a mismatch (being an admin when you suck at organization, for example), your confidence can take a hit.Take a second and assess what you are good at and what feels good to you. T hen, start to do more of that.Heres What You DoStep 1 Write down all the tasks or activities that come easily to you in your currentwork (or past jobs). This can be anything from dealing with unhappy clients to building amazing PowerPoint slides to crafting witty web copy.Then, take a look at that list and circle the things that you actually like to do- the ones that make you feel good and that you actually enjoy doing. (If youre great at logistics but hate it, for example, youre forbidden to circle it.)Step 2 Ask one or two people you trust and respect what they think you are amazing at. Write their feedback down.Step 3 Take a look at your last wertzuwachs review, and figure out what you like about what your boss said about you- in other words, what you want to own as a strength.Now, look at that list. First, take a moment and appreciate all you do have to offer. Youve got mad skills You see it, your friends see it, and even your boss sees it.Then, think about how you might shift y our workload so that youre able to do more of what makes you feel good. If its writing, for example- could you offer to rewrite your departments FAQs or draft a post for the company blog? Even a small shift here can make a huge difference in your confidence (not to mention happiness).Question 3 Whats Going on Inside Your Head?Im a fraud. Im not an expert. I have nothing to offer. ansicht thoughts not only drag your confidence down, they can have a direct impact on your career. After all, if you dont believe in yourself, its pretty hard to get others to believe in you.But if you can find ways to squelch these thoughts and be nicer to yourself, youll start to gain the confidence you need to get ahead.Heres What You DoWhen you have one of these negative thoughts, try to catch yourself. Take a second, take a deep breath, and let the thought pass. Its just a thought its not who you are. You can also think of a time when you felt really good about who you are and what youre doing, and hol d that in your mind. Review your list of strengths if that gives you the reminder that you need.Finally, remember that everyone on Earth has felt this way at some point, and so youhave a choice continue to be hard on yourself, or let it go and focus on what you can do moving forward.Boosting your confidence isnt a quick fix. When I was hired I asked for more money but was told that at the beginning of the new year, when reviews were done, I would get the normal raise as long as I had earned it. I was also told that I would receive a better title with a higher salary at review time, which would make more of a difference in pay. I accepted the job as is, have done a good job and recently received my regular two-percent raise. I am waiting for the meeting in which I will receive a new title, and was told during my review that my pay would be increased to be commensurate with my new title. Doing some research in preparation, I found that the position generally pays about $15K more than I was initially told I would get.While waiting for that meeting, another kick er comes into play. My co-worker moved on about four months ago, and Ive been doing the job by myself since then. My new co-worker started the beginning of this month, and I just found out that he is making that same figure that I feel I should be making, which once again is $15K more than they want to pay me, and $25K more from what Ive been making. My plan is to present the documentation from my research first as to what this title should pay, and if they balk at paying me that, to bring up the fact the my co-worker (we do basically the same job) makes that much. My question is how best to handle this situation.A Its always a good idea to get salary and compensation promises down on a piece of paper somewhere or in an e-mail. When it comes to fulfilling promises, even people with good intentions sometimes forget what they promised, or perhaps a new manager is coming to take the old managers distribution policy and your promise leaves just as your manager leaves. Your plan on prese nting the documentation first as to what the title should pay and then answering objections if they balk at that seems a little backwards.I would suggest that you bring in the research, but that you start the negotiations with your ideal. Im glad I have the chance to talk with you about my performance and compensation. Once weve gone over my performance, I would like to spend a little time telling you what I think my ideal compensation should be and then take the discussion from there. Then when it comes time to talk money, explain what your ideal number is (see marketplace value formula in chapter five of my book) and explain your justification for that number. The number should be bigger than what theyre thinking, even bigger than what their range is. Then you can let them off the hook a little bit, so to say, and say to them I know you probably cant reach my ideal number even if Im worth it, but what can we do to get closer to that number? Then itll be easier for you to negotiate from the top down rather than from the bottom up.
